Holme Pit is a geological Site of Special Scientific Interest in Nottinghamshire, England. It is also a Geological Conservation Review site. It is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest because the strata within the 'Sandstones and Limestones, Mercia Mudstone Group' display a particularly full and diverse range of early Pennsylvanian fossils, spanning the interval from Upper Mississippian to Lower Westphalian (the Meriden carbonates), with abundant kidney and simple ripple marks, showing that this was an ancient undersea shallow marine environment, deposited in warm tropical seas during the mid-Paleozoic era.
The Sherwood Forest National Nature Reserve is an English national nature reserve covering 2,500 acres of land within the city of Nottingham. The area is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Special Area of Conservation. The site boasts Sherwood Forest's largest medieval orchard and is home to many rare species of flora and fauna including the insect eating great green bush cricket, the fairy martin and the white-clawed crayfish.
